1875 Mecklenburg 100th Anniversary Medal

Graded Unc Details Cleaned by NGC

Struck by the U.S. Mint at the request of prominent citizens of North Carolina as a commemorative medal.

The Mecklenburg meeting in 1775 was to declare independence from the British Crown a full year before the 1776 Declaration of Independence.  The meeting itself is considered controversial because virtually all of the “proof” that the meeting occured is from the testimony of people in attendance.   The medals however are very real and only 1005 were struck in Silver with and additional 5 in proof finish.  1000 bronze and 25 bronze proof were also struck.

These medals were struck at the U.S. Mint and designed by the Chief Engraver at the time William Barber
